Civitan Club to honor clergy

The Eastside Civitan Club of Greensboro will honor members of the local faith community during Clergy Appreciation Week, Feb. 3-9.

Club President Belinda Sellers said clergy of all faiths will be honored during the club’s 7 p.m.meeting on Feb. 4 at Laughlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 1417 Huffine Mill Road in Greensboro. The church’s pastor, Rev. George Coates, and Dr. Daran Mitchell, senior pastor of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church, will be among the special guest speakers.

A national observance, Clergy Appreciation Week began as a commemoration of the deaths of four chaplains who died during WWII aboard the torpedoed troopship, the USS Dorchester. The chaplains decided to scarifice themselves by surrendering their life jackets to soldiers.

“This time is set aside each year,” said “Sellers, “to remember this heroic deed and pay tribute to all clergy who have dedicated themselves to making this a better world.”

Civitan is a worldwide civic service organization. Its purpose is to provide its members with opportunities for personal and professional development while providing service to the community.
