History-making judge to speak at banquet

The Wake Forest Black Law Students Association will host its 29th annual Scholarship Banquet on Friday, Feb. 28, at the Milton Rhodes Arts Center, 251 N Spruce St.



Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit Carl E. Stewart will provide the keynote address. Stewart is the first African American Chief Judge on the Fifth Circuit.  He also serves as vice president of the American Inns of Court Foundation.  Stewart is known for his commitment to community service and his receipt of numerous awards for his contributions to charitable and educational activities and events.  Furthermore, he is a board member of the Norwela Council Boy Scouts of America, is a chairman of the Whitney M. Young, Jr. National Service Award Selection Committee for Boy Scouts of America and is a member of the Boy Scouts of America National Scoutreach Committee at the national level.

The evening will also feature the awarding of the annual BLSA Scholarships and the presentation of the BLSA Legacy Award. The banquet is the annual fundraising effort for the BLSA Scholarship Fund. This year, BLSA celebrates its 30th year the scholarship has been in place.

The event begins with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a full program at 6.

“This banquet will be bigger than ever and we are looking forward to an amazing evening,” says Ashley N. Waring (’15),  BLSA vice-president and Scholarship Banquet Committee Chair. “As a nation, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the historic Brown v. Board of Education ruling and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act and Martin Luther King Jr,’s receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize.”

Banquet tickets are $60 per person for non-Wake Forest Law students and $30 per person for Wake Forest Law students. A table for 10 is available for $600. Tickets must be purchased in advance by Jan. 31 for non-Wake Forest Law students, as they will not be available at the door.
