Joe Childers, the principal of Atkins Academic & Technology High School, has been named a 2014 Regional Principal of the Year by the Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools.

Childers has been the principal of Atkins for four years, and the school was named a School of Excellence by the organization last month. Atkins features specialized programs in science, technology, engineering and math.

“It’s easy to shine when you work in a school with great teachers and great students,” Childers said. “I am honored to be a part of this amazing school where students have opportunities to explore STEM in each and every classroom. I am a firm believer in the unique role of magnet schools in transforming public education.”

The N.C. Science, Math and Technology Education Center recognized Childers last month as the N.C. Outstanding Administrator in Science, Math and Technology. He serves on the board of the N.C. Association for Scholastic Acvitivies and is the current president of the organization.

Childers joined Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in 2005 as the principal of Hanes Magnet School. He led Hanes through its transition to a magnet school with a focus on pre-engineering.

Childers also has worked as a principal in Stokes County, as well as an assistant principal, computer coordinator and teacher. Childers has a bachelor’s degree from Pfeiffer College, a master’s degree from N.C. A&T State University and an education-specialist degree from Appalachian State University.

Childers represents Region 4, which includes Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. He will compete to be named the National Principal of the Year at MSA’s national conference in May.

These principals are acknowledged by their peers for their exemplary contributions made to their profession and have demonstrated excellence in the following four areas:
• Promoting equity and diversity among students and staff within their magnet school;
• Providing equitable academic success for all students;
• Leadership implementing and sustaining an innovative magnet program;
• Evidence of leadership within the school district and the magnet community.
